[Article appearing in Boaters Christian Fellowship magazine, March 2004] What's on the Box? A frequent question, whether on the boat or at home. And if you're like us there is an ongoing love-hate relationship with the dreaded TV, especially the quality of programme content. With explicit sex or swearing now accepted on the grounds 'that it adds character' and frequently before the magical 'watershed' time, where can one see wholesome family television? For a time we did subscribe to The God Channel making numerous videos for use on the boat, but even that service had its limitations. Then to cap it all, that set top box went sick with no local repair facility available. But all was not lost, for within the current wave of innovative digital delights and new channels being thrown at us, we were directed to the Suffolk based company of Christian TV . A quick phone call on a Thursday to discuss the options, pay by card, and the new, multi channel digital box arrived the next day. What was even more impressive was that it was up and running within an hour of receipt. Now for me that must be a record! We now have over 100 TV and Radio programmes of which 6 are pure Bible based teaching or Praise and Worship visual channels and 14 similar sound channels; and what is more this is not a subscription service. Just the cost of the box (which can be a single payment or spread over 4 months) and away you go. It seems that 'undesirable' channels have been removed, e.g., you can't get the Sky subscription services. Another advantage, for us anyway being non-liveaboard, is that we can tune in to the local BBC TV service for the area where the boat is moored and get an up to date weather forecast before we leave home. The Company is run by Revs David & Jan Green specifically aimed at producing wholesome family viewing; and most helpful they are as well in offering friendly, understandable advice. We must, however, point out that we are in no way connected with the Company apart from being one of their very satisfied customers. So if you want to know and trust what is on the box, be it boat or land based, please contact Christian TV on 01449 737377 or log on at www.ChristianTV.org.uk . Rod & Gill Nott |
